Transportation

TRANSPORTATION

There are many options for getting around Santo Domingo. Public transport is easily available. This includes public cars (carro publico), buses (guagua) and motorbike taxis (motoconcho) and the new metro line providing quick transportation between Villa Mella and the Centro de los Heroes.

PRIVATE TAXIS

Private taxis are available 24 hours a day and can be called by telephone. The phone operator will tell you what the rate should be for your journey. It is also recommended to ask for the taxi number and the color of the vehicle when calling. This way you can be sure that you are getting to the taxi you asked for. Dominican taxis do not use meters - there are flat rates for each destination. Remember, the farther you go, the more expensive the ride. Always confirm the price with the driver prior to departing - you may give him a piece of paper and let him write the fare, to avoid misunderstandings.

INTERCITY BUSES

Dominican Republic has an excellent bus network. Metro and Caribe Tours provide coach transportation service between Santo Domingo and major cities. Expreso Bavaro travels to the East Coast of the country. Other bus companies connect other cities.

CAR RENTALS

Major car rental companies have branches at airports, hotels and city locations. Take an extra insurance plan, if available. If you suffer an accident that damages your car, the insurance should prevent delays and hassles. The minimum age for renting cars is 21.

WATER

Drink bottled or treated water. Locals do not drink tap water so you will be served bottled water at restaurants.
